Abstract: This paper examines the slow but persistent evolution of republicanism from their origins in the early Ottoman Empire to the representations in the formative years of the Turkish Republic. This analysis has strong contemporary relevance for the understanding of Turkish politics. On the one hand, it shows the complex and many-sided nature of this variegated Turkish republican tradition of political thinking. On the other hand, it argues that we can understand the contemporary crisis of Turkish politics with reference to the way in which the richness of this tradition has been somewhat smothered and obscured overtime. The paper’s broader aim is to highlight the complex dynamics of the transmission and reception of ideas across national borders, so as to further enrich our understanding of intellectual history.
