This course and is designed to give the student an understanding of the concept of democracy as we understand it today as well as the way in which has been perceived, articulated, and criticized throughout the history of Western civilization. In addition to familiarizing the student with and often conflicting definitions of the term, the course and will treat evolving theories of democracy and address such issues as democracy as government; representation; the state and and individual liberties. Particular emphasis will be placed on the relationship of democracy with the notions of pluralism and civil society.
