CONF 542 Collective Violence, Healing, and Transformation Select Term:
Promoting healing, enabling reconciliation and cultivating transformation in countries affected by mass violence remains a pressing question facing the global community. This class will explore the effects of collective violence, such as genocide, ethnic, inter- and intra-state conflict, and the recovery process. Focus will be on understanding the concepts of trauma and resiliency and exploring mechanisms for healing, fostering reconciliation, and transforming the trauma of war at multiple levels of analysis. Students will become familiar with current conceptual frameworks in the fields of trauma studies, social and political psychology, and international development related to these topics. Both historical and current cases of collective violence will be used to consider the effects of violence and the healing process at social, communal, and individual levels. Students will gain familiarity with and consider the challenges to and effectiveness of healing, reconciliation, and transformation processes that have been undertaken in post-conflict countries.
